Aide to the President, Special Presidential Representative for Climate and Water Resources Ruslan Edelgeriyev chaired a meeting on improving assessments of the carbon sequestration capacity of forests and other ecosystem services.
The meeting featured a presentation on the concept of “biocapital” and its relationship to “natural capital.”
Representatives of leading research institutes presented the methodologies developed for an innovative project of national importance aimed at establishing a monitoring system for climate-active substances. The system makes it possible to assess a range of ecosystem services in reference to each other, including biodiversity conservation, greenhouse gas sequestration, and hydrological regulation. Representatives of the forestry sector and Russian regions discussed the practical feasibility of conducting such assessments and their interest in doing so.
