As Mr Zuma and Mr Medvedev agreed in their last telephone conversation on May 28, the South African President briefed Mr Medvedev on the results of his recent visit to Libya, which he undertook following a decision at an emergency summit of the African Union in Addis Ababa on May 25–26, and during which he met with Muammar Gaddafi.
Mr Medvedev assessed as very positive indeed the efforts the African Union and Mr Zuma personally have been making to stop the bloodshed in Libya as soon as possible and put in place the conditions that will enable the Libyan people to decide their own country’s future. Mr Medvedev briefed Mr Zuma on Russia’s efforts in this direction and stressed how important it is to be ready to engage in dialogue with all forces in Libya that have a political future.
The two presidents expressed the hope that coordination of mediation efforts between Russia, South Africa, and the African Union in general will help to return Libya as soon as possible to a road of peaceful and stable development.
