President Vladimir Putin sent President of Venezuela Hugo Chavez a message marking 60 years since diplomatic relations were established between Russia and Venezuela

March 15, 2005
19:30

In his message, Mr Putin wrote that relations between the two countries have become more dynamic and substantial of late and that Russia and Venezuela share similar views on the main global political issues. Russia and Venezuela both support a democratic world order, the supremacy of international law in resolving global and regional problems and a collective search for answers to the challenges of the twenty-first century.

The President also noted that among today’s priorities are actively developing trade and economic relations, including in energy, military-technical cooperation and other key sectors. Moreover, the two countries should also work together to expand their cultural and humanitarian ties and open up new possibilities for direct contacts between their peoples.

Mr Chavez also sent a message to Mr Putin, in which he expressed his hopes for further political and economic cooperation between the two countries, especially on social issues, as this will help Russia and Venezuela to work together to combat today’s major problems such as poverty, social exclusion and hunger.

Mr Chavez also noted that Venezuela and Russia have great possibilities for building up their cooperation in diverse areas and that this should now be the focus for continued development of the two countries’ bilateral relations.
