In his message, Mr Putin said:
“In a few days time, millions of people all around the world will be attentively watching and following the major sports event that is the XX Winter Olympic Games in Turin. You, the best of the best and recognised leaders, will enter a serious, intense and important battle to defend our country’s sporting honour. On behalf of all the citizens of Russia, I would like to wish you a successful start, worthy performances and, of course, outstanding victories and awards of the highest calibre.
Over the days during which these Olympics will take place, we feel a special sense of participation and solidarity with you and we believe in your ability, your determination, competitive spirit and your will to do your utmost and give the best of yourselves. I am certain that every member of the national team has a burning desire to live up to the hopes of their trainers and mentors, give joy to their supporters and inscribe our country’s name in the sporting history of the world.”
