The President had a tour of the nuclear submarines Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and Magadan and heard a report from the commander of the Pacific Fleet, Admiral Viktor Fyodorov, on developing the infrastructure at the base for the Pacific Fleet 16th submarine squadron.
Admiral Fyodorov reported on the implementation of the general plan for basing the 16th squadron in Vilyuchinsk.
According to the admiral’s report, the docks area has been completely reconstructed and normal conditions are now in place for military vessels to be based there. Technical protection of the entire base system has been organised, modern communications systems are now in place and the training centre has been modernised and equipped with new training simulators. Mr Putin asked about work and living conditions for the submarines’ crew members and their families.
The President later inspected the new sports centre and reconstructed residential buildings in Vilyuchinsk, visited one officer’s family and spent time talking with the town’s residents.
Mr Putin also laid flowers at the town’s Monument to the Hero-submariners.
