The Presidents of Russia and Ukraine have issued a joint statement on the situation in Trans-Dniester

December 15, 2005
00:00

The statement declares that the two countries welcome the resumption of the negotiating process between Moldova and Trans-Dniester, which is taking place through the mediation of Russia, Ukraine, the OSCE and observers from the European Union and the United States.

Ukraine and Russia affirm that the trans-Dniester issue should be settled through a process of defining and giving a legal basis to a special legal status for Trans-Dniester that at the same time respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Moldova.

The statement also affirms that Russia and Ukraine are firmly committed to continuing to work actively and coordinate the practical steps they take to facilitate a rapid settlement to the problem by stages through an exclusively peaceful political process of negotiations between Moldova and Trans-Dniester.

Russia considers the Ukrainian initiatives in this area an important foundation for setting the negotiating process moving again and giving it a new impetus, and Ukraine considers the latest Russian proposals for advancing the settlement process to be of significance.
