The Tretyakov Gallery is hosting the exhibition “Masterpieces of Byzantium” as part of the cross-cultural years between Russia and Greece. The exhibits include Byzantine art from the late 10th to early 16th centuries.

Previously, in May 2016, The Byzantine and Christian Museum in Athens displayed Andrei Rublev’s icon “The Ascension”, on loan from the Tretyakov Gallery. The President of Russia attended the opening of the exhibition during his visit to Greece. In September 2016, Athens hosted an exhibition of unique icons and wooden sculptures of the 15th-19th centuries from the Tretyakov Gallery’s collection.

“Roma Aeterna” features paintings of the 12th-18th centuries from the Vatican Museums’ collection, including those by Giovanni Bellini, Melozzo da Forlì, Perugino, Raphael, Caravaggio, Guido Reni, Guercino, and Nicolas Poussin. In 2017, the Vatican will host a reciprocal exhibition, which will primarily include Gospel-themed paintings by Russian artists from the Tretyakov Gallery’s collection.

General Director of the State Tretyakov Gallery Zelfira Tregulova gave the President a tour of the exhibition.
