United Russia’s leaders presented the President with a list of their candidates for the posts of regional governor in the Republics of Komi and Mari El and in Volgograd Region.
Citing the preliminary results from vote-counting in local elections on October 11, Dmitry Medvedev congratulated United Russia on its victory in a number of regions, saying that it confirms the party’s authority and its right to form regional executive government bodies.
The President said that the local elections in Chechnya and Ingushetia had particular significance as, for political and other reasons, local self-government bodies had not previously been formed in these two republics. The elections in Chechnya and Ingushetia signal the completion of work to establish a system of municipal government throughout the country.
