was established in August 2010 by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Its main task is to prepare for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development in 2012. The conference, which will take place in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), is known as the Rio+20 conference – coming 20 years after the Earth Summit of 1992, which laid the basic principles for long-term international cooperation on environmental protection.
Its main tasks are to formulate a new blueprint for sustainable economic growth that will bring increasing prosperity and eradicate poverty while at the same developing a low-carbon green economy (within the framework of the Millennium Development Goals).
Russia is represented on the Panel by Presidential Aide and Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Change Alexander Bedritsky.
The Panel’s secretariat is at the UN Secretary-General’s office in New York.
