is a historic field near the village of Borodino, 125 kilometres west of Moscow. The Battle of Borodino took place there on September 8, 2012 (in French history, it is known as Bataille de la Moskova). It was the largest battle of the 1812 Patriotic War between the Russian army led by Mikhail Kutuzov, and the Army of Napoleon Bonaparte.
About 300,000 Russian and French soldiers and 1,200 pieces of artillery fought this great battle with 40,000 soldiers killed, wounded or missing in action on each side.
The 1812 Patriotic War was Russia's war of liberation against the aggression by Napoleon Bonaparte's army. Napoleon's troops invaded Russia on June 25, 1812. The war ended in December 1812 with an almost complete annihilation of Napoleon's army, liberating Russia's territory. The Russian army's foreign campaigns of 1813-1814 ended with the seizure of Paris (March 31, 1814) and the fall of Napoleon's empire.
