includes six republics (Daghestan, Ingushetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachayevo-Circassia, North Ossetia-Alania and the Chechen Republic) and Stavropol Territory. The city of Pyatigorsk is the district’s capital.
The district lies in the south of European Russia, in the central and eastern part of the North Caucasus. Its territory accounts for about 1% of Russia’s total area. It borders the Caspian Sea to the east, and the Greater Caucasus range, Georgia and Azerbaijan to the south.
It is home to 9.6 million people (6.6% of Russia’s population).
The North Caucasus Federal District has favourable conditions for developing the agro-industrial complex, tourism, resort and spa, power industry, mining and processing, and also has developed transit function.
