The President, who earlier made a public statement and sent a telegram to Mr Kan, once again personally expressed his profound condolences to Prime Minister of Japan following the severe natural disaster that has struck the country.
Mr Kan thanked Mr Medvedev for the attention and sympathy Russia has shown, and for the real help and assistance that Russia is already providing on the ground, gave an assessment of the situation in the regions hit by the earthquake and tsunami, and spoke about the specific plans for using the Russian teams in the search and rescue effort.
Mr Medvedev and Mr Kan discussed practical aspects of the kind of aid Japan could require taking into account the scale of the disaster and its aftermath. The two leaders agreed to keep in contact on these matters at every level in order to make swift decisions on any further Russian assistance.
