Mrs Medvedeva laid a wreath outside the Embassy building and placed flowers before a portrait of Lech Kaczynski and his wife in the embassy’s main hall.
The First Lady wrote in the book of condolences: “We share the Polish people’s sorrow on this anniversary of the tragic plane crash near Smolensk on April 10, 2010. Accept my sincere condolences. The pain of this loss has not faded to this day. May the victims’ memories continue to shine forever.”
Speaking with the Polish Ambassador to Russia and his wife, Mrs Medvedeva also expressed her sincere condolences to the plane crash victims’ families and said that Russia shares the Polish people’s grief.
Lech Kaczynski’s plane crashed as it was coming in to land near Smolensk on April 10, 2010. All on board the plane were killed, including the Polish President, his wife, prominent Polish politicians, almost the entire senior Polish military command, and public and religious figures. Mr Kaczynski was flying to Russia as head of a delegation due to take part in memorial events commemorating the deaths at Katyn.
