The Agreement was signed in Madrid on July 9, 2014.
The Agreement defines procedures for cooperation between the Russian and Spanish sides on adopting children who are citizens of one of the nations by couples permanently residing on the territory of another of the nations. At the same time, adoptive parent candidates must meet the requirements set by national law.
In particular, the Agreement stipulates that the child will obtain citizenship from the state to which he or she moves following adoption and maintains citizenship in the state where he or she resided before adoption. At the same time, citizenship in the nation where he or she resided before adoption cannot be terminated until adulthood.
