The message reads, in part:
“I am sincerely glad that interest in this outstanding, entertaining form of martial arts is increasing every year, as is its popularity among spectators. And this is as it should be, since judo combines unique fighting techniques with a distinctive, profound philosophy; it tempers will and character, nurtures the best human qualities, teaches us how to make quick decisions and respect our opponents.
The current championship has brought together in Budapest the best and strongest athletes of our continent. I am sure that they will demonstrate their skills and commitment to Judo’s ancient traditions and etiquette in intense and uncompromising fights.”
