The message reads, in part:
“Since being founded, Novorossiysk has played an important role in promoting Russian statehood, defending Russia’s Black Sea coast, making its contribution to the economic and industrial development of the country. You are rightfully proud of your native city’s legendary history, covered with military and labour glory, as well as its wonderful patriotic, cultural and spiritual traditions.
The courage and fortitude of the Soviet soldiers and officers that took part in the battles for Novorossiysk, the landings and the heroic defence of the bridgehead on Malaya Zemlya, will forever remain in the memory of the people. The city’s defenders pinned down Nazi forces, thus largely ensuring victory for the Red Army in the Battle of the Caucasus and preventing the enemy from transferring reinforcements to other key front sectors.
We will always honour the heroic deeds of the generation of victors in the Great Patriotic War and remain faithful to their covenants of love and devotion to the Motherland.”
