The All-Russian Museum of History and Ethnography, established in 1988 at the initiative of Academician Dmitry Likhachev, is located in the historic centre of the city where it occupies several buildings which are architectural landmarks from the 18th and 19th centuries. Part of the museum is in the suburbs of Torzhok. Its holdings include 35 collections and over 62,000 depository items.
Accompanied by Museum’s director Irina Zhukov, the President visited one of the sites – the Museum Rows exhibition complex with its rich archaeological collection. He examined Old Russian manuscripts, reviewed samples of arms from the 12th and 13th centuries as well as handicrafts and household items that belonged to residents of Torzhok in the 11th-17th centuries.
Starting next April, the Museum Rows exhibition complex will be closed for large-scale restoration, which should be completed in 2026.
