A total of 2,600 children from all around Russia and more than 200 children from the G8 and CIS countries took part in the anniversary celebrations.
The First Lady’s gift for the occasion came in the form of a concert by popular performers, which she helped to organise on the stage at Orlyonok.
Governor of Krasnodar Territory Alexander Tkachev read out Ms Medvedeva’s message of greetings.

“Dear friends!
I offer you my warmest congratulations on the 50th anniversary of the Orlyonok National Children’s Centre’s founding.
Here, in one of Russia’s most picturesque corners, on the Black Sea coast, a real children’s capital has taken root, a happy place filled with optimism, youthful energy, and bright ideas.
Each new season brings a unique new group of children to Orlyonok. The current group is doubly unique and is here under the motto – Dialogue of Cultures through Dialogue between Individuals. In this anniversary year the centre is playing host to an international gathering of young leaders. Here now are the participants in the Junior G8 from Russia, the USA, Britain, France, Japan, Germany, Canada, and Italy, and also children from the countries in the Commonwealth of Independent States.
The children holidaying at Orlyonok are all different, but each of them is unique and talented. I am sure that the centre’s famed atmosphere will help them all to develop their creative potential, make new friends, and get to know different peoples’ cultures and customs.
I address special thanks to the centre’s team of experienced teachers, guides and sports instructors. They are all extraordinary and remarkable people who put much effort and energy into giving our young people a harmonious education.
Once again, I congratulate you from all my heart on this holiday and wish you luck, good health, and happy, joyful holidays.”
