The Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea was signed in Aktau on August 12, 2018.
According to the Convention, the Parties implement sovereignty, sovereign and exclusive rights as well as jurisdiction in the Caspian Sea.
The Convention determines and regulates the rights and commitments of the Parties on using the Caspian Sea, including its waters, bottom, mineral resources and the air space above the sea.
In line with the Convention, the Parties’ actions in the Caspian Sea must be in line with the principles of respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, independence, sovereign equality, non-use of force or its threat, mutual respect, non-interference in each other’s internal affairs, the use of the Caspian Sea for peaceful purposes, and absence of armed forces that do not belong to the Parties.
