Russia amends Criminal Code to counteract acts of sabotage

The President signed the Federal Law On Amending the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation and the Code of Criminal Procedures of the Russian Federation.

December 29, 2022
17:05

The Federal Law introduces amendments to the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation to counteract acts of sabotage.

Under the amended legislation, the fact that an offence is committed for the purposes of propaganda, justification or support for sabotage is qualified as an aggravating circumstance.

The articles added to the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation establish greater liability for acts such as the facilitation of sabotage activity (inducing, recruiting or otherwise involving a person in acts of sabotage, arming or training a person for the purpose of committing such crimes, or of financing sabotage), organising and financing sabotage, undergoing training for the purpose of carrying out acts of sabotage, or organising and participating in a sabotage related group.

Persons found guilty of these acts can be sentenced to life. On the other hand, a person can be exempted from criminal liability if he/she, by reporting, in a timely manner, to the authorities or otherwise, has contributed to the suppression of this crime, the exposure of a crime committed, or if their actions did not include other elements of the crime.

The Code of Criminal Procedure of the Russian Federation shall be amended accordingly.
