Among the demands the international community made of the Liberian leadership was to immediately cease support for the Revolutionary United Front of neighbouring Sierra Leone and other rebel groups in the region.
The sanctions being introduced included an embargo imposed on direct and mediated exports of rough diamonds from Liberia, irrespective of their provenance.
The resolution prohibited all arms exports to Liberia and flights of all Liberian-registered aircraft within UN jurisdiction until the aircraft register was updated. The document also prohibited foreign trips by Liberian officials and their relatives.
