The meetings examined opportunities for developing the two countries’ strategic partnership following the results of the early parliamentary election in Moldova at the end of November.

Meeting with Acting Moldovan President and Parliamentary Speaker Mihai Ghimpu, Mr Naryshkin had an interested discussion that emphasised Russia’s readiness to maintain regular political dialogue and build up the two countries’ traditionally friendly ties, economic cooperation and humanitarian contacts in the common interest. Mr Naryshkin noted that historical brotherhood and spiritual closeness of the two countries lay a solid objective foundation for advancing bilateral relations.

The exchange of views on these matters continued with the leaders of parties represented in the newly elected parliament, Chairman of the Party of Communists Vladimir Voronin, and Chairman of the Democratic Party Marian Lupu. In their assessment of the situation and the difficulties in putting together a ruling coalition they stressed the importance of strengthening Moldova’s statehood and sovereignty and finding effectively solutions to the country’s complex social and economic problems.

Both politicians noted Russia’s important role in reaching a settlement in Trans-Dniester. Mr Naryshkin stressed that Russia is committed to continuing its efforts to ensure stability in the region and bring about the conditions for renewing the 5+2 format talks.

Also taking part in the meetings were State Secretary and Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Grigory Karasin, and Russian Ambassador to the Republic of Moldova Valery Kuzmin.
