Mr Miklushevsky said that each of the region’s 496 schools will have a sports club with the needed equipment by 2020. There are also plans to build 58 mini-stadiums close to schools for playing mini-football, hockey, volleyball and basketball. Five indoor ice hockey stadiums will be built over the next two years.

Cultural sites were also discussed at the meeting. St Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre has opened a branch in Vladivostok, and Mr Miklushevsky proposed that the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet, also from St Petersburg, open a branch in the region too. A branch of the State Hermitage Museum will open in the centre of Vladivostok in 2017. A modern new space will be built on Russky Island to house the Museum of the East. Two of the country’s biggest art museums, the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow and the Russian Museum in St Petersburg, have also already chosen sites in central Vladivostok for their future branches in the region.
