The summit’s participants discussed ways to improve nuclear security and prevent the threat of nuclear terrorism, and examined specific measures that would ensure absolutely safe storage of nuclear materials.
Speaking at the plenary session, Mr Medvedev announced the decision to shut down the last reactor producing weapons-grade plutonium in Zheleznogorsk, Krasnoyarsk Territory, by the end of this year.
The summit adopted a final communique in which the participants declared their commitment to strengthen nuclear security and reduce the threat of nuclear terrorism and emphasised that success will require responsible national actions and sustained and effective international cooperation.
The communique also reaffirmed the essential role of the International Atomic Energy Agency in the international nuclear security framework.
The summit participants adopted the Work Plan on strengthening physical nuclear security.
