The telegram reads, in part:
“In Russia and abroad, you are known as an outstanding scientist and a major scientific leader. Your fundamental works span a broad range of problems in numerical and applied mathematics. The research methods you have developed are widely employed in various areas of natural science.
You are fruitfully engaged in educating young scientists, and many of Russia’s mathematicians are proud to call you their mentor.”
Guri Marchuk has conducted studies on numerical simulation of nuclear reactors, numerical techniques for problems of the atmosphere and ocean dynamics, and weather forecasting algorithms. Extending reach of applied mathematics, Mr Marchuk was a pioneer in numerical modelling for immunology and medicine.
