Born on June 23, 1952, in Leningrad.
Graduated from the Leningrad State University in 1974.
After graduation, spent the next 28 years working in operations and management posts in the security agencies.
2002–2003 – Deputy Director of the Federal Protection Service.
2003–2007–Deputy Chairman of the Board of  Gazprom.
In 2007 – First Deputy Director of the Federal Guard Service.
In October 2007, was appointed Adviser to the President and Acting Director of the Committee for preparing and organising Russia’s chairmanship of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum in 2012.
Since May 19, 2008 – Adviser to the President.
Speaks German and English.
