Born August 15, 1946 in Ufa, Bashkir Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic.
1976
Graduated from the Kurgan Machine-building Institute in 1969, from the R.Y. Malinovsky Tank Academy in 1976 and from the USSR armed Forces General Staff Military Academy in 1989. Holds a candidate degree in sociological sciences, a doctorate in military sciences and is a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Missile and Artillery Science.
1969
Served in the Armed Forces from his graduation in 1969 through to 2004. Began serving in the military as deputy commander of a tank company then moved on to hold various command and staff positions. Commanded a tank regiment, tank division and a tank army. Served in the Turkestan Military District, the Central Troops Group and in the Central Asian, Belorussian and North Caucasus Military Districts.
1992–1994: Deputy Head, First Deputy Head of the Russian General Staff Chief Operations Directorate.
1995–1997:Commander of the North Caucasus Military District.
1997–2004: Chief of General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces and First Deputy Defence Minister of the Russian Federation.
2004–2010: Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Siberian Federal District.
Holds the rank of Army General and has been awarded with a title of the Hero of the Russian Federation.
Married, two sons.
