Presidential Advisor and Special Presidential Representative on Climate Issues Ruslan Edelgeriyev took part in the UN Climate Change Summit, at which he announced that Russia had adopted the Paris Agreement. Government Resolution 1228 of September 21, 2019, legally confirms the adoption of this document.
Speaking at the summit, Mr Edelgeriyev emphasised Russia’s contribution to global efforts to reduce hothouse emissions. Thus, compared to 1990, the reduction of anthropogenic hothouse emissions in Russia was approximately 41 billion tonnes of C02 equivalent, which slowed global warming by one year. Mr Edelgeriyev spoke about the role of Russia’s boreal forests in absorbing carbon dioxide and Russia’s use of low-carbon technology.
He emphasized that it is important to avoid the politisation of climate change issues and the division of states into blocs in order to make global efforts on climate change more productive.
