This framework agreement sets out the basic principles for cooperation in the field of nuclear energy. Such cooperation is to be conducted exclusively for peaceful purposes.
In accordance with the Agreement, the parties shall cooperate in the exploration and development of uranium deposits, design, construction and operation of light water reactors, and nuclear safety, including radiation protection and monitoring of the environment. The Agreement also regulates the supply of nuclear materials.
Annexes to the Agreement detailing the equipment for nuclear reactors and facilities designated by the International Atomic Energy Agency as those to which guaranties of the adequate levels of physical protection stipulated under the Safeguards Agreement for the Russian Federation shall apply, constitute integral parts thereof.
The Agreement was signed in Tokyo on May 12, 2009.
