Also taking part in the ceremony were the leaders of Russia’s traditional religions and members of Russian youth organisations.
A reception took place later at the Kremlin to mark the holiday.
The National Unity Day was established as a national public holiday in 2005 to commemorate the events of 1612, when the people’s volunteer army led by Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky liberated Moscow from the foreign interventionist forces.
