The Military Historical Society was established by the presidential executive order of December 29, 2012, and continues the traditions of the Imperial Russian Military Historical Society, which was founded in 1907 and fuctioned until the 1917 revolution.
The society’s founders are the Culture Ministry and the Defence Ministry, and its main purpose is to unite public and state efforts to study Russia’s military history, spread knowledge of the military history’s achievements, and teach patriotic spirit.
The society’s work will be directed at immortalising the memory of the fallen, building and restoring monuments, carrying out archaeological studies at historical battle sites, providing support for search groups and military historical re-enactment associations, improving archives, and developing and establishing related museums and libraries.
The congress will take place in the Central Great Patriotic War Museum on Poklonnaya Gora in Moscow. Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office Sergei Ivanov, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, State Duma Speaker Sergei Naryshkin, Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, Culture Minister Vladimir Medinsky, prominent historians, academic and cultural figures, archives professionals, members of search groups and military history re-enactment associations, military servicemen and public activists will take part in the congress.
