Mr Putin said he considered the decision taken by the United States a mistake.
Russia had refused to withdraw from the treaty, as suggested by the US, the President said, and had done everything in its power to keep it alive.
He said Russia would firmly follow its principled policy in world affairs, a policy aimed at promoting strategic stability and world security.
