Both leaders focused on ways of solving the Kaliningrad problem.

Mr Putin said the common European home concept should become a reality and that the political will of European leaders was essential for solving the problem of the Kaliningrad Region.

The Russian leader called on the European Commission not to overlook the entire range of human rights issues while searching for a solution to the Kaliningrad problem. According to Mr Putin, Russia and the European Union could squander the current level of mutual trust and political relations.

Both leaders exchanged opinions on some other important international issues and discussed bilateral relations. They focused on long-term contacts between Finland and St Petersburg and other Russian territories bordering on Finland.

Mr Putin and Mr Halonen held a joint news conference after the talks.

Prior to the talks, both leaders took a guided tour of an exposition at the Russian Literature Institute, also known as the Pushkin House.
