Speaking at a meeting with members of international non-governmental organisation the Council for Cooperation, Mr. Putin said that there is a need to work together on developing and improving the system of international law in order to ensure it remains an effective tool for solving the problems the world faces today.
The president said that the United Nations should play a central part in the existing system of organisations that unite the international community. Mr. Putin said that discussions on ways to modernise the United Nations are possible and necessary, but that this should not diminish the UN’s current role and activities.
The president said he was pleased to see that responsibility for resolving the crisis in Iraq has been returned to the United Nations, and that a political approach has re-emerged as the main means of regulating other serious regional problems, above all the situation in the Middle East.
