President Vladimir Putin sent a message to South African President Tabo Mbeki congratulating him on being reelected as President and on the tenth anniversary of the establishment of democracy in the Republic of South Africa, Freedom Day

April 28, 2004
14:30

The message said, in part:

“10 years ago the people of your country made their choice in favour of freedom, equality and democracy. We note with satisfaction the significant economic and social successes that South Africans have scored over these years. It is heartening that the processes of transformations aimed at strengthening the democratic foundations of the state and consolidating society continue.

“We appreciate the balanced and principled position of South Africa on global and regional issues. The similarity of our approaches provides a solid basis for deeper cooperation in shaping a just world order, in opposing such threats as international terrorism, local conflicts, economic crises and epidemics.

“As a permanent member of the UN Security Council and a member of the G8, Russia backs the commitment of South Africa and other African states to putting the continent on the path of sustained development. In connection with this, we are ready to actively contribute to the New Partnership for African Development Programme (NEPAD).

“Russia values the spirit of friendship, mutual understanding and solidarity that has been a hallmark of our bilateral relations. We are pleased with the high level of the political dialogue between our countries and we intend to further deepen it. We attach particular significance to expanding the mutually beneficial trade and economic ties, which, I am convinced, have a great potential for growth.”
