Vladimir Putin sent a greeting message to President of the French Republic Jacques Chirac on the national holiday of France, Bastille Day

July 14, 2005
00:00

The telegram reads, in particular:

“This momentous event has become a symbol of the triumph of freedom over tyranny, and in many ways predetermined the development of modern civilisation on such principles as sovereignty of the people, lawfulness, and respect of the dignity and rights of the human being.

The cultural and ideological legacy of France has always evoked special interest in Russian society. And today the traditional mutual sympathy of our nations and the close ties of their historical fates serve as one of the bases of privileged partnership between the two countries. It is pleasing that in the 21st century we are reaching promising areas of interaction, and creating additional stimuli for deepening interregional ties, and for realising business and social initiatives of our citizens. In general, we are raising the level and scale of diverse bilateral cooperation.

I am certain that our recent meetings – in Moscow for the 60th anniversary celebrations of the victory over Nazism and in Kaliningrad – are another step on the path to further strengthening of Russian-French partnership. Partnership which will serve the interests of our countries, and stability and progress in Europe and the world.”
