Relations between Russia and Japan have become much closer over recent years, President Vladimir Putin said at a meeting with the members of the Russian-Japanese Council of Wise Men. Russia and Japan are working together to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons and to combat terrorism, organised crime and drugs trafficking. The two countries have immense opportunities for bilateral cooperation in the fuel and energy sector.
All-round efforts should be made to continue developing business and cultural contacts in the aim of further strengthening the partnership between Russia and Japan.
Mr Putin said he regretted that Russia and Japan have still not concluded a peace treaty and noted that this problem can be resolved only by finding a solution that conforms to the principles of international law and takes into account the national interest of both countries.
