The major topics of discussion included the crisis in Estonia and continuing instability in Ukraine.
Vladimir Putin expressed his gravest concern in connection with the dramatic developments in Tallinn connected with the Estonian authorities’ desire to dismantle the monument to the Soldier Liberator. In turn, Angela Merkel called for a swift resolution of the problem and for all parties involved to exercise moderation.
With regards to the situation in Ukraine, the Russian President and President of the EU Council of Ministers emphasised the need to resolve all legal issues. In connection with this, they emphasised the significance of the forthcoming verdict by the Constitutional Court of Ukraine.
During the interview they also discussed preparations for the EU-Russia summit that will be held in Samara on 17–18 May 2007.
