The meeting focused on topical aspects of social and economic development in the North Caucasus and the problem of migration. Harmonising local legislation with the Russian Constitution was also discussed.
President Putin said, in part, that the programme of social and economic development in the Southern Federal District should be included in the list of federal target programmes to be implemented starting in 2002. The President mentioned the establishment of a system of transport corridors in the region, oil and gas export organisations and health resorts as priority objectives included in the programme.
After the meeting, Mr Putin replied to journalists’ questions.
At the end of his visit to Rostov-on-Don, the President met with Akhmad Kadyrov, head of the Chechen Government.
