The message reads in particular:
”Thank you for your warm letter and gracious initiative. Once again we see evidence that the strategic partnership and cooperation relations between Russia and China are based on the mutual understanding and sincere friendship between our peoples.
The huge losses that mankind suffered during World War II were irreplaceable. And we must honour the memory of that terrible ordeal, the heroes who gave their lives for our children and grandchildren. And in connection with this, the erection of the Messenger of Friendship and Peace monument that represents the efforts of female translators to save the lives of innocent people will be gratefully received by future generations.
I think that the following words could be inscribed on the monument:
“Our friendship consists in mutual understanding, trust, shared values and interests. We remember the past and are thinking about the future”.
Previously, the inhabitants of Suifenhe, China asked the Russian President to compose several words that would be inscribed on the Messenger of Friendship and Peace monument that was designed and executed by representatives from the I. E. Repin St Petersburg State Academic Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture at Chinese initiative.
The sculpture depicts an event that took place on 12 August 1945 when the Soviet troops liberated Suifenhe from the Japanese. Galina Zhang, a 17-year old inhabitant of Suifenhe whose father was Chinese and whose mother was Russian, was sent twice as a translator, together with our parliamentarians, to the fortress where the Japanese military held several hundred civilians with the request that they surrender. However, Galina Zhang was killed.
The unveiling of the monument, constructed with funds gathered by the residents of Suifenhe, is planned for 3 September 2007, the anniversary of the Japanese surrender in the Second World War.
