Mr Putin and Mr Akayev discussed current issues of Russian-Kyrgyz cooperation, including the trade, economic, energy, and military technology fields.

Mr Putin thanked his Kyrgyz colleague for giving official status to the Russian language in the Constitution of Kyrgyzstan. In his view, that would lead to positive changes in both countries.

On the same day, Mr Putin sent a message congratulating Mr Akayev on the tenth anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance between Russia and Kyrgyzstan.

The message said, in part:

“Over the past period the treaty has become a foundation for the multi-faceted strategic partnership between our two countries. Today relations between Russia and Kyrgyzstan are also developing in a dynamic and confident fashion, and cooperation is strengthening in all areas.

“I am sure that we will continue working in concert to develop integrative processes in the Eurasian Economic Community, to strengthen the Collective Security Treaty Organisation and improve the Commonwealth of Independent States. Signs of commitment to this are the strong historical ties established between our two states, ample past experience of cooperation, and on-going constructive dialogue.

“There is no doubt that the treaty will go a long way towards further developing diversified Russian-Kyrgyz cooperation and mutual assistance in the interest of traditional friendship between our fraternal peoples. It will also help to coordinate efforts assuring security and strategic stability in Central Asia.”
