Vladimir Putin approved the plan of military exercises in the Caspian Sea in August as submitted by Vladimir Kuroyedov.
The training mission of the Caspian Flotilla should fulfill the tasks set by the President aimed at maintaining stability, protecting the interests of the state from terrorism in all its manifestations, preventing ecological catastrophes and handling their impacts, conducting sea rescue operations, and putting an end to illegal drug trafficking.
About 10,000 servicemen from Russia, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan will participate in these large-scale exercises to be held for the first time in many years. Sixty vessels and over 30 planes and helicopters will be involved. The heads of the Caspian states will watch military exercises.
The President underlined the need to thoroughly prepare for the exercises and said that afterwards the agencies concerned should draft documents governing the relations between ministries and departments in fulfilling such tasks.
