Mr Putin appointed Sergei Kiriyenko as general director of State Nuclear Energy Corporation Rosatom.
This state-owned corporation was established through the reorganisation of Federal Nuclear Energy Agency Rosatom. The corporation has under its charge joint-stock company Atomenergoprom, defence industry enterprises working on nuclear weapons, and fundamental science institutes and enterprises involved with nuclear and radiation safety.
The objective in setting up the new corporation is to ensure coordinated management and implementation of state policy in the nuclear energy sector, stable operation in the nuclear energy industry, the nuclear weapons sector and nuclear and radiation security, and the formation of conditions for stable functioning of defence industry organisations. Rosatom will also be responsible for compliance with international commitments with regard to the peaceful use of nuclear energy and the nuclear materials control regime.
