President Medvedev met in Makhachkala in expanded format with Security Council members to discuss measures for dealing with threats to national security in Southern Federal District. Mr Medvedev emphasised the need to take tough measures to counter threats to national security in the North Caucasus, and instructed the National Anti-Terrorism Committee (NAC) to work out a set of organisational and operational measures to deal with terrorist activity and crime.
During the working visit Dmitry Medvedev also visited an FSB special purpose Centre, the newly opened Daghestani [Republican] Centre for Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery, and had a working meeting with President of Daghestan Mukhu Aliyev.
Earlier in the day and en route to Makhachkala from Moscow, the President discussed the operational situation in Daghestan and measures taken by law-enforcement agencies to further normalise the situation in the Republic with Federal Security Service (FSB) Director Alexander Bortnikov.
