The message of greetings reads, in part:
“With its rich history and traditions, your creative event is a real festival for art lovers. It is always followed with great interest by connoisseurs of ballet here and abroad, and it is evidence of the Russian choreographic school’s world renown. For many young performers the chance to take part in this prestigious competition is not only an excellent opportunity to demonstrate their talents but also a source of encouragement on their road to continued professional growth.
It is symbolic that this year, the performances are taking place at Russia’s legendary Bolshoi Theatre, which has given the world many great choreographers and dancers. I hope that the example of our outstanding compatriots will inspire contestants from all countries to display their talents and put on a memorable and unforgettable performance for the audience.”
The competition takes place at the Bolshoi Theatre on June 10–20, 2009 with a total of 122 performers and 24 young choreographers from 21 countries taking part.
The competition was first held in 1969, and takes place once every four years.
