Dmitry Medvedev stated that a decision made by the Japanese parliament, which declared the Southern Kuril Islands to be indigenous Japanese territory, created an outburst of unwelcome emotions and is not conducive to the kind of atmosphere necessary for good-natured and open dialogue between the two countries.
The President directly pointed out that if Russia and Japan are serious about making compromises in order to resolve this issue, then they must act accordingly, which includes work with their own parliaments.
The leaders also discussed international matters, particularly North Korea-related issues and prospects for further enlarging cooperation between Russia and Japan to ensure security in the Asia-Pacific region. The two sides agreed to continue practical consultations.
However, the leaders devoted the greatest amount of attention to bilateral talks and the prospect of signing a peace agreement and resolving territorial disputes between Russia and Japan.
