The message reads, in part:
“The Nevsky International Ecological Congress is one of the most prestigious international forums devoted to environmental issues. This is the sixth time that representatives of governments, business and expert communities from over 20 countries have gathered in St Petersburg to discuss current environmental issues and outline prospects for joint efforts on raising environmental consciousness.
We attach great importance to these issues. 2013 is the Year of the Environment in Russia. We will devote great attention to the matters on the Nevsky Congress agenda: development of environmental legislation, the management of water resources and promotion of biotechnology.
Environmental consciousness is, above all, the desire to prevent a negative impact on the environment and preserve the planet’s natural resources. The awareness that humankind cannot flourish if it shatters the fragile ecological balance is on the rise. Therefore, it is vitally important to join efforts to improve the accountability of governments and businesses, and promote environmentally conscious behaviour among the public.
I am confident that the Congress will bring together governments, businesses, civil society institutions, research organisations and all concerned people in the conservation of nature and respect for its wealth. The well-being of future generations largely depends on this.”
