On June 22, marked in Russia as the Day of Memory and Sorrow, Vladimir Putin will lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and will present certificates conferring the title of City of Military Glory

Announcement, June 22, 2015

In a ceremony at the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin will present to representatives of Staraya Russa, Gatchina, Petrozavodsk, Grozny and Feodosia certificates conferring upon these cities the title of City of Military Glory.

The executive orders signed by the President on April 6, 2015, state that this title is conferred for courage, steadfast spirit and mass heroism shown by these cities’ defenders in the struggle for the freedom and independence of their Fatherland.

City of Military Glory is an honorary title awarded in the Russian Federation. It was established by the Federal Law of May 9, 2006. A stele depicting the city’s coat of arms and the text of the executive order by the President of the Russian Federation to bestow this title on the city is to be erected in each City of Military Glory and special public commemorative events are to be arranged, as well as regular celebratory fireworks on February 23 (Defender of the Fatherland Day), May 9 (Victory Day), and City Day.
