The President will also visit the Orenburg Nature Reserve, which implements a programme to restore the population of Przewalski’s horses, which are listed in the Russian Red Data Book and the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
The Przewalski’s horse re-introduction centre was established in the Orenburg Region with support from the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the UN Development Programme and the Global Environment Fund. The first small herd was brought to the centre from France in 2015 and spent a year adapting to the new conditions. In early October, six horses from the acclimatisation enclosure will be released into the reserve’s main area.
