The President resolved to hold events in 2017 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Russian Book Chamber.
Instructions to this effect were issued to the Government of the Russian Federation.
Established on May 10, 1917, the Russian Book Chamber is one of Russia’s oldest cultural institutions. This was the first state-run entity in the world established for the purpose of registering and ensuring perpetual storage of all print matter, regardless of its subject, specialisation or volume.
The National Depository of the Russian Book Chamber contains the most complete collection of printed material published in Russian and other national languages. This collection has been building up since 1917 and now features more than 80 million items, including various books, newspapers and magazines, theses and summaries, maps and sheet music, art calendars and albums, as well as postcards and posters, engravings and even labels, theatre programmes, restaurant menus and many other objects.
